Vaccine roll out begins

More than 137,000 people in UK receive first dose of COVID vaccine in one week

It’s thought over 137,000 people in the UK have received the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in the first week of the largest vaccination programme in British history.

Most of the vaccines have been administered to the over-80s, care home workers and NHS staff.

Over the coming weeks and months more doses are expected to become available and the programme will continue to expand.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock thanked the NHS across the UK for all their hard work. “This is just the start,” he said. “We will steadily expand our vaccination programme – ultimately helping everyone get back to normal life.”
