New Covid-19 variant that spreads more quickly discovered

A new variant of Covid-19 that spreads more quickly has been discovered.

Data from Whole Genome Sequencing, epidemiology and modelling suggest the new variant ‘VUI – 202012/01’ transmits more easily than other variants. However, there is no evidence to suggest that it is more likely to cause severe disease or mortality.

There is also no evidence to suggest that the Pfizer vaccine would not protect people against the new variant. Further laboratory work is currently being undertaken as a priority to understand this.
